Volvo L – wheel loaders that became a standard in Swedish construction

Volvo uses the letter L to designate its wheel loaders within Volvo Construction Equipment. For decades, these machines have been a natural choice in construction, industry, and material handling – particularly in the Nordic countries.

The wheel loaders are known for their reliability, logical machine design, and long service life. As a result, many Volvo L machines remain in operation long after production has ended.

For machine owners and workshops, Volvo L is therefore not about a single model, but about a designation system where several generations coexist in active use. Being able to identify the correct spare part is crucial to keeping machines productive over time.

Background: What does Volvo L mean?

The letter L stands for Loader, i.e. wheel loader. Volvo has long used letter designations to differentiate machine types, where L refers to wheel loaders, EC to crawler excavators, and EW to wheeled excavators.

The numerical part of the model designation – such as L50, L70, L90, or L120 – indicates the machine’s size and weight class, not the year of manufacture. The same model designation may therefore remain in use for a long time while the machines are technically updated through different generations.

In practice, the term “L series” is often used as a collective name for Volvo wheel loaders, even though it refers to a designation system rather than a formal product line.

Generations and model designations

Volvo L models are continuously updated in generations marked by a letter after the model number, such as L60E, L60F, L60G, and L60H.

Each new generation introduces technical updates, often related to engines, emission requirements, hydraulics, operator environment, and control systems, while the base platform and model designation remain.

Older generations may now be out of production, but are still widely used in construction, industry, and material handling.

Production and Swedish heritage

Volvo wheel loaders have strong roots in Sweden and in the heritage of Volvo BM. For many years, wheel loader development was closely linked to Sweden as a key part of Volvo’s machine history.

Over time, production has taken place within Volvo CE’s global industrial network, involving both Swedish and international facilities depending on model and generation.

Why are Volvo L wheel loaders so common?

  • Reliable design
Machines built for continuous operation in demanding environments.
  • Easy to service
Clear layouts and proven solutions simplify maintenance.
  • Long service life
Many machines remain in daily operation despite being out of production.
  • Strong aftermarket
A large installed machine base creates ongoing demand for spare parts.
