JCB – brief history

JCB is the brand name of J.C. Bamford Excavators Ltd. The company was founded in 1945 by Joseph Cyril Bamford in the United Kingdom and is headquartered in Rocester, Staffordshire.

JCB is a privately owned family business. In an industry where many manufacturers are publicly listed or part of large industrial groups, it is notable that JCB has remained family-owned across generations. Since its founding, the company has maintained a clear focus on construction and agricultural machinery.

The business was established immediately after the end of the Second World War, during a period of increasing mechanisation within construction and agriculture across the UK and Europe. Early production focused on agricultural equipment before expanding into backhoe loaders, excavators and material handling machines.

Products and model range

Backhoe loaders

One of JCB’s most recognised machine types. Classic model names include 3CX and 4CX. These model designations have been used across several generations, and specifications vary between model years and configurations.

Excavators

The JS series is central to JCB’s excavator range, including models such as JS130, JS160 and JS220. The number generally reflects the approximate operating weight in tonnes. Wheeled versions are often marked with a W, such as JS130W.

Telescopic handlers

Marketed under the Loadall name. Model designations may indicate lifting capacity and lift height depending on generation and configuration.

Tractors

JCB’s tractor line is strongly associated with the Fastrac. The series entered production in 1991 and has evolved through multiple generations.

JCB at Agrocon

JCB machines from the 1990s and 2000s remain widely used across Europe. For many owners, continued operation depends on access to the correct spare parts.

We have, among other projects, dismantled a JCB JS130W , a wheeled excavator within the JS series, where we assessed condition, documented components and made parts quickly available.
